The optical properties of ZnO nanoparticles are substantially different from those of bulk crystalline ZnO. The luminescence spectra are dependent on the crystalline size (quantum size effect).
Several techniques for preparing ZnO nanoparticles have been developed. The intensity of the visible luminescence of the ZnO colloids prepared using these methods is remarkably high.

In this study, the preparation of ZnO nanoparticles in an amphiphilic N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) gel was investigated. Furthermore, the stability of the ZnO colloidal nanoparticles formed in the gel network was examined along with the capability of size control at the nanosized level by the synthesis composition of the gel.
